The Babes Do Birmingham

October 30, 2022

As my last maternity leave starts to come to an end, I'm trying to squeeze as many memorable days in as I can, so last week my mum and I took Maggie and Charlie for an adventure on the train into Birmingham. We were treated with a gloriously sunny day with clear blue skies so Birmingham really was showing itself off.

Mum hadn't been into town for ages, so hadn't seen all the changes where the Pallasades and the old Library used to be, so we decided to visit the new Library and headed over from Colmore Row via Victoria Square. We stopped to look at the iconic 'floozy in the jacuzzi' fountain, and mum gave Charlie a coin to throw in and make a wish. When we asked what he wised for, he replied "a castle" and if that's not the best wish an almost three year old could make, I don't know what is.

At the library we visited the children's section on the lower ground floor first, and then when we could eventually convince Charlie to see something else, headed to the viewing deck on level 9 which had some surprisingly lovely landscaping and impressive views of town below.

Charlie's favourite part was definitely the middle section of the library where you can ride up and down the travelators surrounded by the circular walls of books. It's such an awe-inspiring space and it was heartwarming to see Charlie taking it all in with visible amazement.

After we raced mum and Maggie back down to the entrance, we headed down towards New Street, where a long overdue Wagamamas called to us. Next was the toy section and food hall in Selfridges, before heading on the train back home. It was such a lovely day and so special to share time with mum and the babes in Brum.
